The nation was glued to their screens, excitement spilling over the edges of their seats as Dylan Alcott – eight times Australian Open wheelchair champion and reigning grand slam hero the world over, on the day after being announced the Australian of the Year 2022, took to the court. Since the morning’s TV program the story of a fairytale ending to his sporting career as Dylan had announced his retirement from the sport before hitting the 2022 Australian Open grand final.
I used to write them every year. I even wrote them out beautifully, slip them into envelopes and seal them to be re-opened the next New Years. And, while I did think of them, reiterated them in my mind or even read affirmations on my mirror every day – well, for the first few weeks at least…
Did my New Year Resolutions work? Hmmm… seeing that I wrote them year after year and featuring pretty much more of the same… probably not.
I recall hearing that Joan Armatrading song with the same title for the first time back when migrating out to Australia in the late 80’s, and I have to say, I did not get it. Honestly, I was much more into Tracey Chapman tracks at the time, but what stood out to me then, in me not getting it, came to me later, much later.
Really, nothing matters more than the relationship with yourself. And, once you get this, you will truly appreciate time with yourself for the first time. And then some more…
